One of the primary goals of the school’s administration was to establish a sense of identity for the middle school on the grounds of an existing pre-K to 12 educational facility—to create a “campus within a campus” setting. The architect’s solution is the seamless integration of a new two-story middle school campus at Pine Crest Preparatory School.

The administration also requested that this new facility be developed around a team-based learning environment. The resulting design provides for three separate areas for each of the middle school grades 6 to 8. Within each area, individual classrooms and science laboratories surround a common group seminar space. This unique design allows for each specialized classroom to be independent, yet interrelated visually and physically, as needed, via the common seminar area that promotes group interaction and learning. Although independent, each team area is part of a unified middle school campus with shared common areas, including dance and art studios, a multipurpose auditorium and an outdoor activity courtyard.

Through the use of traditional building materials and design elements found throughout the school’s 42-acre campus, including open courtyards, quadrangles, covered walkways and balconies, the new buildings blend flawlessly into the overall fabric of the school, while creating a defined, middle school setting.
