This project is a key component of the school’s long-range redevelopment master plan. After reviewing the facility program, the architect proposed the adaptive reuse of the original boys’ residence hall, which could be modified and renovated to meet the program requirements and was available because the school no longer had a boarding program.
The core element of the facility was a new weightroom and training area, but the program also included locker rooms and showers for boys and girls, a new administrative office suite and conference area for the athletic director, a coaches’ office suite with a videoconference room and storage rooms. Multipurpose spaces for use as classrooms or meeting rooms also were included and incorporate operable wall systems to provide the needed flexibility of the spaces.
To accommodate the weightroom equipment, a portion of the original second floor was removed to create a two-story-high atrium space at the center of the building. A second-floor balcony interconnects the spaces at each end of the building and provides a bird’s-eye view of the weightroom area below.
With the completion of this facility, the school now is able to provide a fitness training program tailored not only to its athletes, but also to all students. At the same time, it is a creative reuse of one of the oldest buildings on campus.
