Pine Crest Lower School
Boca Raton, Florida
Pine Crest School is pioneering a nationwide direction for schools as one of the first private schools to facilitate a project-based learning methodology within the development of a LEED-certified facility. The Boca Raton campus has been formed anew with the phased replacement of the school’s main administration building, a new Lower School building and a redefined campus.
The innovative program objectives include the re-creation of the campus; construction of new exterior learning spaces; and enhancement of the ability for students to interact with natural areas and the environment. The existing 22-acre site maintains native species and enhances a conservation buffer at its north and east sides.
A second innovation is evidenced in Pine Crest administration’s commitment to the environment: The school was awarded LEED gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Some of the specific green components of the project include cisterns, photovoltaic panels, solar hot water, a children’s planting garden, native plantings, exterior shading of the windows, and touchscreen monitors that enable students to check energy and water consumption.
