Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Georgia Campus

The architect transformed an existing warehouse with 30-foot ceilings into a modern facility housing classrooms, research labs, administrative offices, a fitness center, bookstore, dining and information commons for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s new Georgia Campus.
The team was asked to incorporate strong identifying elements such as the “flame of knowledge” from the Philadelphia campus into the design. Interior walls are set at various heights to create views that one might find in an exterior setting. These varying heights also help to change the scale of the spaces, creating an improved relationship to people.
One of the key challenges was the design of the information commons in that no raised seating could be incorporated because of the intent to use high-tech A/V equipment.
Color was applied to highlight forms and enhance the play on positive and negative spaces created by interior architecture. Different spaces have been articulated as volumes that project into the avenues to create natural areas for meeting spaces. This technique also adds to the idea of a streetscape and a vibrant environment.
