Peter Pitseolak High School
Cape Dorset, Nunavut, Canada
The new 3,140-square-meter school accommodates 215 students from grades 7 to 12 on one level. The floor plan is designed to provide maximum benefit to both the staff and students while also supporting the need for flexible community spaces. The building site takes advantage of the local topography and highlights the use of natural light into building through its positioning. As the building sits high in a valley surrounded by mountains and rolling rock landscape, several views are captured within the building, including views to the community and Ice Lake.
The design incorporates Inuit culture and reflects Northern values and elements that promote Inuit identity. Several cultural spaces and classrooms encourage traditional forms of education and gatherings. The overall design meets or exceeds the functional requirements of the school programs, specifically as it relates to communal and gathering spaces. The large central gathering area includes built-in seating and a double-sided stage that is shared with the gymnasium. One final addition to the school’s program was including valuable storage area within the school’s footprint.
