Pauls Valley Junior High School
Pauls Valley, Oklahoma
In planning for the Pauls Valley Junior High School, some community members wanted to build a new facility, and others wanted to renovate an educational structure built in 1919. Through a long period of non-use, the old structure had been left open to the elements, which resulted in ground-water damage on the lower level, rendering the structure unusable.
The solution was to renovate the old structure with a deconstruction vernacular. The result rendered a new state-of-the-art education facility that preserved elements from the past and appeased the entire community.
The school was transformed with new wood doors, exposed ductwork and indirect lighting. First-floor corridors were widened and left open to overlook the lower-level gymnasium and to provide seating for a food court and special events. New walls provided a palette for local artists to express regionalism in paintings.
This project embraced and preserved many original details of the structure and brought the entire space up to education design standards.
