Parker Elementary School
Elk River, Minnesota
Like many 1970s open plan buildings, Parker Elementary had several critical issues to address. Lack of security, poor acoustics and under-performing HVAC systems made it increasingly unsuitable for educational delivery. Wold worked with Elk River Schools to not only address maintenance issues, but also reinvent the entire school for contemporary delivery.
The first step was to reorganize the labyrinth of classrooms into cohesive four-classroom clusters supported by collaborative resource spaces. The central, open media center was retained as the organizational hub but with greater definition of zoned areas to limit distractions in high-traffic areas. Smaller individual study and small group areas were added to provide personalized learning opportunities as well. The main office was relocated from the interior of the building to be adjacent to the entry, and a secure vestibule was created to improve student safety. The HVAC system was replaced with an induction displacement approach for maximum efficiency and the highest air quality levels. The result is a building now unified in both educational and operational high performance.
