Ovid-Elsie Middle School
Elsie, Michigan
A rural school district of modest means has connected its students to the world and encouraged their learning through sophisticated technology and facility design. The plan builds on distinct grade and departmental pods along a central spine.
Each pod surrounds a core of teacher areas and conference rooms for individualized learning. Large skylights and the stepping plan allow for natural light to reach central circulation. Custom mobile casework was designed, allowing computer-equipped student workstations to be parked in rows for lectures or docked at base cabinets for lab sessions.
The 7-12 information center is the heart of the campus, a hinge point between the middle school and senior high that provides securable access for the community.
It includes a student-run FM radio station, television studio, distance-learning classroom, Cyber Cafe and space for 240 people to work and learn. Teachers can sign out lobes of the 68-station technology island, and teach using wireless microphones and headsets or have material delivered via fiber-optic cable to their classrooms.
