Oneta Ridge Middle School is a new school near Tulsa, Okla., serving grades 6 to 8. The central theme of this school is transition—the transition from primary to secondary school, from dependence to self-reliance, and from a neighborhood building to a large civic building.
The front of the school, housing the extracurricular spaces, presents a monumental civic face to the community. The back areas of the building, housing the classrooms, are intimate, quieter spaces, designed to be more conducive to study. The gymnasium and the cafeteria, with its outdoor dining area, are situated near the faculty parking lot on the east side of the building, which also provides convenient public access for after-hours events.
The academic areas include science labs, an engineering technology lab, a library, and an art room with an outdoor art patio. The fine arts wing includes a music room, a black box theater and a drama room. The gym seats 500 for competitions or 1,000 for assemblies, and includes concessions, locker rooms and training rooms. Both the gym and the cafeteria are designed with infrastructure in place for future installation of an Insta-Theatre Stage System.
