Envisioned to accommodate modern teaching methods and growth in enrollment, the project presented the college with an exciting opportunity to engage the university’s previously undeveloped “Arts & Education Green.”
A major addition to the north complements the building and the campus’s Georgian architecture. It establishes a needed edge to the Green. A contemporary atrium forum just beyond the historic building entry overlooks the Green, and features an open staircase incorporating casual seating tiers.
Interspersed throughout each floor are many classroom and laboratory types and sizes, along with plenty of faculty office and support space. Collaboration among students and faculty is encouraged through a series of project rooms and varied gathering areas, both large and small.
A technology “black box” offers dedicated space to develop new pedagogy. The attic was creatively captured for unique (and cost-effective) departmental office space, connected down to the third floor via a lightwell. Exterior enhancements include a new brick entry plaza, a third-floor terrace to be used as an outdoor classroom and lounge, and a green roof.
