In an effort to ensure the academic success of its students, Ohio State University developed a new concept for a holistic learning center. This facility houses the student-athlete support services office, academic learning center, career services, counseling and consultation services, and faculty and teaching assistant development. Staff will work together to provide a continuum of integrated services.
It was designed as an infill building on a block where adjacent buildings have yet to be constructed. Central to the building’s design is a glass facade that showcases the activities inside. An interior atrium serves as a “crossroads,” promoting interaction among the various departments, while providing daylight to the interior spaces. Energy-efficient strategies save 40 percent of the annual energy cost of a code-constructed building. This facility will define the interactive learning center of the future—flexible and dynamic in nature; nurturing, yet high-tech and adaptable.
