Ohio Dominican University (ODU) identified the need to grow academic programs in the STEM fields, yet lacked the modern laboratory facilities to support the growth. The campus master plan called for an addition to the existing science building. However, early design studies showed this site/configuration would not provide academic science space to fit the vision, so a new building was designed.

ODU’s Battelle Hall provides visibility and transparency for the sciences on campus through flexible teaching laboratories (chemistry, biology, anatomy and physics) and a collaborative research suite. Technology-rich classroom design and scalable study and social spaces are organized around an inviting central atrium. Strategically sited on campus, the building is oriented to promote “cut-through” traffic in an effort to expose non-science majors to the sciences.

The exterior design of the building was detailed in order to be contextual with adjacent historic building massing and architectural character, yet establish a modern identity and presence for the sciences on campus.

Aligning with the university’s goal of campus sustainability, the energy-efficient and daylight-filled building received LEED gold certification.
