Odyssey Elementary School

Odyssey’s design supports an educationally innovative learning pedagogy and incorporates conservation and sustainability into student education.
• Large collaboration spaces accessed through 16-foot-wide glass roll-up doors enable fluid interaction between the classroom environment and group space.
• All furniture is mobile, so that learning spaces can be reconfigured rapidly.
• Students are organized into four “habitats” (small learning communities) built around the theme “Bodies in Motion: The Animal Kingdom,” piquing student interest and curiosity.
• The floor plan’s total flexibility enables reconfiguration of grade levels into mini-academies and provides opportunities for cross-grade collaboration.
• It is the first net-zero-energy school in the state, and is on track for LEED Gold certification.
• Photovoltaic panels are incorporated into sun-shading devices. A full array on the roof offsets all energy required for the building.
• Fun signage explains the sustainable features of the building—water conservation, improved indoor air quality, high-efficiency envelope, innovative mechanical system, alternative transportation options, and recycling (both during construction and for the occupants).
• Innovative mechanical system and multilevel LED lighting create an extremely healthful and energy-conserving facility. The building will use less energy than any other school in the state and will cost less than half to operate than a typical school.
After visiting Odyssey and seeing how the teachers and students are interacting, Lily Eskelsen, 2015 President of the National Education Association, said: “The building is part of the learning environment in a way I’ve never seen. It’s designed for collaboration and exploration. I want to be 10 years old again, just so I can go to school at Odyssey.”
