Programmed, designed, permitted and constructed in two years, the Dr. Kiran C. Patel School of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University was designed to support an active learning philosophy. Three key factors were considered and used throughout the project:
• Prospect: An unimpeded view over a distance, for surveillance and planning.
• Refuge: A place for withdrawal from intense conditions or the main flow of activity, in which the individual is protected from behind and overhead.
• Mystery: The promise of more information, achieved through partially obscured views or other sensory devices that entice the individual to travel deeper into the environment.

Some pragmatic considerations were easy wayfinding and embracing the natural coastal environment. A strong plaza axis, which acts as a gathering space for collaboration and interaction, connects the parking garage to the center of the building. The plaza is designed to house 500-person ceremonies in addition to providing pedagogical moments of learning. It has seating and strolling spaces to connect with the surrounding natural elements.
