The new Campus Center is the latest addition in Northland College’s efforts to expand and update its campus. The building will be a focal point for the entire campus and will replace an aging and out-of-date facility. Its design is based on the vernacular of the campus architecture, as well as historical connotations of traditional collegiate building styles. Equally important, it represents the strong environmental values of the college through the employment of sustainable design, construction and operational principles.
The facility will serve as the school’s main kitchen and cafeteria, and will house an expanded post office. These two functions will commingle students and faculty on a daily basis and will make the building a focal point for activities and events. In addition, the Alvord Theater, an existing theater facility, will be renovated and incorporated into the new structure. The facility also will provide office space for faculty and staff.
The initial concept for the building is derived from a new landscape plan intended to turn Northland’s formal mall into a more picturesque green space. The student center will become an integral part of this axis with its high, gabled front thrusting into the green, bringing casual focus to the activities within.
Sustainable design principles employed include incorporating large amounts of natural light into work and lounge areas; using recyclable and green building materials, and providing natural ventilation to cool the building. Further, motion and light-level sensors will turn lights off when necessary.
