Constructed of face brick with pre-cast concrete trim, the facility includes flexible pre-K, full-day kindergarten and grades 1-5 classrooms. Specialized art, music and media spaces bask in natural light furnished by clerestory windows. Special-education and resource rooms are designed to accommodate changing program needs, and a stage built for instrumental rehearsal needs serves both the cafetorium and gymatorium areas.
The facility utilizes state-of-the-art voice, video and data networks, providing access to off-site information resources and homework hotlines.
The architecture incorporates a sloping, visible roof design to maximize durability and minimize future maintenance costs. Emphasis has been placed on making areas of the school accessible for after-hours community use, while maintaining security within the remaining educational spaces.
The architect was involved in the selection of the 15-acre site and assisted in negotiating site improvements with the developer of the donated property, including access to utilities and road improvements, such as bus acceleration and deceleration lanes.
The project was bid at a price considerably below the school board’s budget.
