Northern Center
Marquette, Michigan
A new, welcoming, and attractive front door to the university, the multifunction Northern Center features first-class conference and event rooms and amenity spaces that enable students to relax, study and socialize.
Constructed in 1959 with subsequent additions in 1964 and 1966, the building needed significant renovation and modernization. It lacked appropriate wayfinding strategies and pre-function space. The design sought to celebrate the procession and the event, and to take advantage of views to Lake Superior with spaces that are easily accessible, warm, and inviting.
Conference spaces were enhanced with technology systems and acoustically correct rooms that provide additional capacity.
Amenities such as the university bookstore and student organization offices were relocated to provide increased visibility within the building, thereby expanding their usage.
Unique to the building is the student activity zone. Students can dine, socialize, play darts or shuffleboard, and enjoy events on the many flat-screen televisions placed throughout the space, which is designed to represent Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University’s brand.
