Nitschmann Middle School
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Design Team: Robert J. Breslin, AIA; Michael K. Ackerman, AIA; Gwen H. Breslin, AIA; Robin W. Breslin, AIA
The new four-story Nitschmann Middle School was constructed on the same site as the facility it replaced. It therefore remains at the heart of the West Bethlehem neighborhood it has served for nearly 100 years. The new school also was sited strategically so that the existing middle school could remain in operation for two years during construction.
The center classroom wing is anchored by an auditorium and cafeteria on the east end and two gymnasiums on the west end. Separate athletic and auditorium entrances help manage simultaneous events at the school. Classrooms are grouped for team teaching together with centrally situated science labs.
At the main entrance is a tall clock tower topped with a glass enclosure that is illuminated at night. The tower serves as a civic landmark to the surrounding neighborhood and is symbolic of the building’s service to both school and community.
After the old middle school was demolished, new synthetic athletic fields were developed in its place. The resulting active, open green space is an extension of the city’s green corridor, including the Rose Gardens across the street. An arched gateway frames a view of the school from the intersection of two major thoroughfares in the city of Bethlehem.
