The predominant features and organizing elements of the building composition are a main concourse and a central courtyard.
The main concourse not only serves as the primary access path from the bus loading area, parent drop-off zone and public parking area, but also organizes the internal programming of the building. Shared use facilities are organized along the western edge of the concourse and are separated from the primary classroom spaces to the east by the concourse.
The eastern edge of the concourse also anchors an internal courtyard framed by classroom instructional spaces. The library serves as a direct intermediary between the concourse and the courtyard—affording direct visual connections to the undulating terrain and clumps of birch trees that animate the courtyard space. Collaborative areas are interspersed within the classroom composition—encouraging additional physical and visual interaction with the outdoor space.
The courtyard provides a recurring focal point throughout the classroom areas, enhances wayfinding and ultimately functions as a series of outdoor teaching spaces.
