New Mexico Highlands University, Natatorium
Las Vegas, New Mexico
Completed in March 2011, the 12,605-square-foot remodel of the natatorium reinstates an important student recreation center on the New Mexico Highlands University campus. The remodel includes improvements to the exterior and interior of the building, as well as site and landscaping developments.
The natatorium was designed to attain LEED silver certification. A variety of green design principles were utilized, including the reuse of existing structural and non-structural elements, a water-catchment plan, photovoltaic energy systems, recycled and regional materials and finishes, additional insulation, heating and cooling upgrades, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and landscaping using native plants.
A semi-enclosed patio was added west of the pool. Operable glass doors join the outdoor patio with the indoor pool. Daylighting the pool was an important consideration; it needed to admit natural, but indirect lighting to bounce off interior surfaces.
