New Jersey Institute of Technology, Eberhardt Hall

Eberhardt Hall at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark was renovated to serve as a new alumni center containing the University Alumni Club, conference center, overseers and alumni association boardroom, and offices for alumni affairs and university advancement.
The exterior is a rare and outstanding example of Elizabethan Gothic Revival style. Sound original construction, together with maintenance over the years, had left the exterior facade generally unaltered. The exterior of the building was restored as authentically as technically possible to its 1885 appearance—the year NJIT was founded.
Authentic brownstone was used to replace broken brownstone elements; custom-made brick of proper color and size replaced broken brick; and the gables and tower were rebuilt.
The interior spaces had been altered over the years, and all original finishes had been lost except for the grand stair. The date of 1889 to 1890 was determined to be the period most appropriate for the restoration and recreation of the building’s interior, because the university was founded during that period.
