New Early Learning Center
Des Plaines, Illinois
This child-centered and nature-inspired Early Learning Center uses research-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum to dictate a child’s experiences within. A focus on play-based learning moves children through varied learning settings designed to support different aspects of holistic child development. The four Learning Hubs are key to this experience-based program.
• The “Imagination Station” is a library-type space that provokes inquiry and exploration with a puppet theater and a stage.
• Young children are exposed to STEM concepts in the “Tinker Lab.” It provides the environment for them to make sense of problems and work to solve them.
• Children learn positive attitudes toward food and health in the nutrition-focused “Make It Market.”
• The “Fitness Factory” is designed to support both structured and unstructured physical activity for large motor development.
To further support wellness, biophilic design is woven throughout the building and creates a sense of emotional safety. Setting the tone for the experience, the entry begins on a wooded path with a real tree; the corridor mimics walking through the woods alongside a river flowing past each hub.
