With early interaction from the entire design team and guidance from the school’s board of directors, the project was completed on time and under budget. The collaboration resulted in a statement building, well-suited to represent the values of the school. A senator said, “I’m blown away … This looks like a higher-education building … This is one of the great success stories of the state.”
The three-story structure sits at the front of the 26-acre campus and houses 14 classrooms and four science labs. The organizing theme of the layout is the suspended Group Study Pods that hang in the open, airy, two-story Student Commons. The education model is built on collaboration, and the facility exhibits it.
The building is situated to maximize the use of daylighting. Each classroom has either north- or south-facing glass. Expansive glass in the commons faces north for light and energy efficiency.
The school has been recognized with several awards, including a NC School of Distinction and a NC Honor School of Excellence.
