Nagel Middle School

Designing common spaces for Nagel Middle School meant responding to the district’s desire for two controlled entry points: an easily identifiable daytime entrance leading directly to the administrative offices; and a separate entrance for the activity wing that could be isolated for after-hours use.
The main entry is a hexagon-shaped two-story space connecting the activity and academic wings. The administrative offices, counseling and clinic areas, a student bookstore and a publications room adjoin the main lobby. The lobby is both the central point of control for the building, and a student gathering and commons space.
The hexagon-shaped activity lobby is open for after-hours use. It can be used for gathering during the intermission of a theatre production or an impromptu pep rally. Trophy cases highlight student athletic achievement, and ample gallery-style wall space is available to hang student artwork, and theater and concert posters.
Sophisticated neutral colors and finishes provide a backdrop for student achievement. Floor and ceiling patterns relate to the prominent hexagon shapes used in the entry lobbies.
