Muse Elementary School
Muse, Pennsylvania
Muse Elementary School is an outgrowth of the Canon-McMillan School District’s commitment to carrying out its well-developed Master Facilities Plan. Consolidating three obsolete elementary schools into one, Muse serves grades K-4. This new building provides students and teachers with all the benefits of a modern educational environment, while maintaining a comfortable scale and unique identity. Muse is designed to house each grade level in its own neighborhood of classrooms. Core areas—gymnasium, music room, cafeteria, offices, library—are clustered near the main entrance, with direct access from each grade level grouping. The gymnasium and cafeteria are bridged by a stage; both spaces have clear sightlines to view concerts or presentations. The building is sited on a hill overlooking the community and employs design techniques and systems that maximize sunlight and lighting, enhance ventilation, and conserve energy. Exterior walls are face brick and concrete decorative masonry units. The roof is a combination of low-profile and metal-pitched.
