Mountain Valley School District’s new PK-12 is a true testament to collaboration. From the beginning, the architect knew this project would have a significant impact on the Saguache, Colorado, community and took steps to integrate students, staff, and community as much as possible into the design. The result is a school that serves the students that learn there and functions as a community center for the entire town of Saguache.
The facility features a flexible media center, grade-based team centers (elementary, middle school, and high school), cafeteria/commons, collaboration spaces, and a history corridor where historical Saguache and Mountain Valley memorabilia are on display.
Along with solving the planning challenges associated with separating different age groups in a PK-12 school, the project had to be carefully phased because the new Mountain Valley School was constructed while the existing school remained operational on the site. The nearest metropolitan area is three hours from Saguache, so all systems were thoroughly designed for ease of maintenance. The project received LEED certification.
