Mount Saint Mary’s University, Terrace Residences
Emmitsburg, Maryland
The Terrace Residence Hall is a focal point on the campus of Mount Saint Mary’s University overlooking St. Joseph’s Valley in Emmitsburg, Md. Known as the Terrace, it has 107,230 square feet in three interconnected residences: DuBois, Brute and McCaffrey Halls. Carefully phased renovations were coordinated with the university to provide safe occupancy of 75 percent of the 425 beds during construction.
The building program was developed to encompass three areas of focus:
•Life safety and accessibility concerns.
•Improvements and replacement to the building infrastructure and wayfinding.
•Creation of new student living spaces.
The 2½-year phased renovation included renovations to the residence hall rooms; replacement of the MEP systems and roofs; and installation of life-safety systems, two elevators and lifts to accommodate access to multiple floor levels; introduction of views onto the campus; distinct finish schemes to give each hall its own identity; and creation of a new main entrance, gallery, student chapel, game room, student lounges, study rooms and fitness center.
