Moraine Valley Community College, Technology Center Renovations
Palos Hills, Illinois
The Center for Contemporary Technology at Moraine Valley Community College was in need of significant renovation as a result of evolving and emerging programs, under-utilization of existing space, and a disorienting circulation system. Additionally, project goals included the creation of a revitalized front door for the facility, the development of engaging student life space, and the development of a showcase for the college’s premier Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance.
To address these challenges, corridor spaces became an integral component of the overall design strategy. Active student touchdown areas were created throughout the facility to allow students to connect and learn, whether alone or in groups. Views into program spaces and high-tech equipment such as a yellow, glass-encased server room along the building’s main artery, enliven the building and display previously hidden programs.
Bold angles, lines and colors are used as the vocabulary throughout the building, conveying the fast-paced reality that surrounds today’s world ingrained with technology. Meanwhile, transparency is integrated throughout the building to reveal its infrastructure, turning the building itself into a learning laboratory.
