To help prepare students for the ever-changing communications and media landscape, Montclair State University sought to break down silos of traditional media and create a flexible cross-platform program that could be customized to serve student and professional needs.
The design teams faced two challenges:
1. Assisting the university in creating a comprehensive, multiplatform program encompassing all elements of communications and media.
2. Developing a design approach that captures the context of early 20th-century Mission style architecture and manifests a genuine contemporary design.
The new School of Communication and Media offers state-of-the art audio/visual, digital, IT/telecom, acoustics and lighting technology, and helps forge relationships with top media brands across the region through an on-campus news bureau. Digital laboratories and a “newsroom of the future,” integrated media labs, a soundstage and post-production editing suites provide the latest in broadcast and print technology. Additional assets include a fully featured 4k/IP-based studio, soundstages, set shops and green rooms. The facility also contains two high-end post-production rooms, a film studio and a radio station (90.3 WMSC-FM).
