Modesto High School, Science and Mathematics Classroom Building

Modesto High School is an 80-year-old urban campus with a student body of 3,000. The school includes the International Baccalaureate Programme in which 15 percent of the students participate.
As an IB World School, Modesto sought to enhance its science and mathematics departments with a state-of-the-art facility. The design challenge included creating a campus focal point for student gathering and activities.
The new facility replaces an antiquated classroom wing in the heart of the campus. All construction traffic was escorted through the campus for student safety.
The new facility is a two-story concrete block and steel frame structure providing three chemistry labs, three general science labs, central science teacher prep areas, 11 mathematics classrooms and department offices. The science labs were designed for technology upgrades including computers for student workstations. Smart boards were planned for each lab and classroom setting.
Two grand exterior stairs serve the second floor, and the building bridges over a major pathway leading to existing science buildings.
