Mitchell High School, Performing Arts Center
Mitchell, South Dakota
Tasked with constructing a new fine arts center on an already crowded campus, MSH Architects helped the school district envision a site that functions with the existing buildings. Attached to the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy, the building includes classrooms, practice rooms, and performance areas that will enhance the education of hundreds of students each year.
The Performing Arts Center is divided into two sections. About three-fourths of the space is dedicated to skill development and has a band room, a choir room and various classrooms dedicated to performance-related programs. The auditorium that makes up the remainder of the facility is dedicated to the presentation of those talents and serves as a venue for regional events.
The Performing Arts Center’s performance hall will place Mitchell at the forefront of South Dakota’s larger school districts. The hall’s predominant feature, a 1,227-seat, three-tier auditorium, is the largest high school auditorium in the state. Nevertheless, no seat is more than 110 feet from the stage.
