The cafeteria at Missouri Western State College needed a redesign to increase its use. The new food service offers unlimited servings of several menu concepts. This replaced a “homestyle” concept. Western wanted to create an upscale dining room appearance while keeping an eye on maintenance issues and its budget.
Seating areas are defined by new carpeted patterns over existing terrazzo and are reflected in new suspended ceiling patterns below the existing ceiling grid. Serving areas are highlighted with contrasting ceiling materials and applications.
New lighting accents the different areas and has brightened the cafeteria for a warm, inviting feeling. The 300-plus seating is now filled to capacity at nearly every meal. The all-you-can-eat cafeteria is open to students, faculty, staff and the public.
Many of the existing systems were retained. Additions to existing hoods with makeup air were made, as well as new made-to-order kitchen equipment. Existing furniture is being replaced to complement the new design. The food-service staff went to great lengths to accommodate student dining during the period the cafeteria was closed.
