Millstadt Consolidated School Primary Center
Millstadt, Illinois
Millstadt Community Consolidated School District #160 is a small, rural district that had been experiencing moderate growth. This growth prompted the district to undergo an extensive community-engagement planning process, resulting in referendum passage. The district elected to build a 39,316-square-foot primary center for children in pre-K to second grade, on a 16-acre tract of land adjacent to the village park. Creating a safe and secure environment where young children would be encouraged to learn; maximizing usable space;and building within the district’s limited budget were project objectives.
The heart of the building contains shared spaces—the multipurpose room, fine-arts room and the library; the academic wings, which house classroom space, can be secured after school hours to enable those shared spaces to be open for community use.
The kindergarten wing is made up of five kindergarten classrooms and one pre-kindergarten classroom, and a separate first- and second-grade wing contains five classrooms for each grade level. The pre-kindergarten classroom has direct, private exterior access to an outdoor playground with a covered, paved area. This private access also enables parents to pick up their children without disrupting other classes.
Overall, the efficiency of the floor plan is clear and simple to navigate for young students, and the location of the school enables it to become an integral part of village activities.
