Mills Lawn Elementary School, Renovation and Additions
Yellow Springs, Ohio
The program required additional instructional spaces for special-education classes and music, and increased stage area to accommodate drama presentations.
The addition was designed to avoid the elimination of any of the large trees that are on the 11.1-acre site, which also serves as a public park.
The solution addressed the main building’s relationship to the annex by providing a skylighted corridor that connects the existing elements and integrates them with the new spaces.
An event entry was created to accommodate evening perform-ances on the new stage in the expanded gym.
The result is an integrated facility functioning as a whole, as if all elements were original and ordered at their inception.
