Millennium High School

Millennium High School is a response to Governor Pataki’s plan for the revitalization of New York after Sept. 11, 2001. The goal was to design a school that supported a progressive educational model within the rigorous New York City school system standards.
Situated in former office space within a 35-story building, the school is structured around a portfolio-based educational model, including student-centered learning, full sensory stimulation, varied path progression, and processes that foster information exchange and critical thinking.
The first phase of the project, completed for the fall 2003 academic year, included the design and construction of the entrance lobby and the 13th-floor neighborhood for 250 ninth- and tenth-graders. The second phase, now underway, is the design and construction of the vertical Learning Street, the school community floor and 11th- and 12th-grade neighborhood floor.
The architect was commissioned to design and build the project within 14 weeks—in time for the start of school and to coincide with the second anniversary of 9/11. The schedule constraints demanded a unique design-build delivery process imported from the private sector. This methodology provides a design-led process that controls schedule and budget, while providing strong design services that support the school’s learning goals.
