Words the owner used to express their dreams for the new schools included "traditional," "fun" and "Oklahoma-themed." Using the state song, "Oklahoma!", for inspiration, the design includes references to fields of wheat (in terrazzo tile floor patterns), wind and rain (mobiles) and hawks (acoustical panels). A round red barn is located in the front entry corridor. Animal shapes from various state eco-regions (such as the tall-grass prairie, great plains, crosstimbers and swamps) are located in each grade pod, and are unique to each school.
The two new identical schools were designed to replace four aging, inefficient schools. The new schools were built on existing school sites and have identical footprints. They were built on the playgrounds of the existing schools, which stayed in operation until the new schools were complete. Much of the new plan organization was dictated by the varying site constraints of the existing schools. There are separate drop-off lanes for buses, pre-K/K parents, and 1-5 parents; a separate fenced pre-K/K playground; and a flag football area.
Grades pre-K through 2 are located on the ground floor, under the leadership of one principal, while grades 3-5 are located on the upper floor under the leadership of another principal. Grade levels are organized in six-classroom pods, each with a commons area. First floor music rooms are designed as storm shelters.
