Giving new life to an antiquated rural elementary school was the intent of this intensive demolition and construction project. Portions of the school, which no longer support the district’s curricular strategies, were slated for demolition. An expansion was needed for classrooms, a student learning center and administration. The kitchen and dining area were replaced to accommodate student population growth.
The new two-story structure has a prominent entrance, flanked by administration as a secure checkpoint and dining in a centralized area of the school. It is adjacent to the front lobby so it can be used for after-school functions and community gatherings. The main corridor leads to a modernized student learning center and provides access to classroom spaces.
A landscaped courtyard has hardscape for an outdoor teaching area and a pleasant backdrop for the student learning center, with its expanse of glass for daylighting and views. Colorful interiors promote a lively experience provide appropriate lighting in educational spaces. Classrooms were designed with maximum flexibility for curriculum pedagogies and student-teacher collaboration.
