Middletown City Schools is leveraging a building project to reinvent the district and serve as a catalyst for change across the city. A former industrial community, Middletown is in the midst of an educational transformation focused on teaching 21st-century skills and celebrating diversity.
The district’s modernized high school was designed around science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) education to prepare students for college and careers. Innovative spaces for project-based learning, research and experimentation are expanding opportunities for students. They provide the flexibility to work independently, in small or large groups, and with integrated technology to develop future-ready skills.
The modernization also has re-established the school as the center of its community. An athletics complex and a community health clinic serve students and the public. The school hosts Ted Talk-like presentations, college and career fairs, robotics competitions, poverty simulations, diversity celebrations, interview training and more. The transformation has created a sense of pride within students and staff that has rippled throughout the community.
