Recognizing the need for a new learning environment and community hub, Prince George County Public Schools built Middle Road Elementary School. Navigating the design process of this new school during the Covid-19 pandemic required innovative approaches to collaboration and communication. Because of the inability to meet in person, the planning process was conducted virtually, enabling all stakeholders to be heard and fostering unity and shared purpose. Through collaborative efforts among the design team, school administrators, community members, and other stakeholders, a shared vision for the school emerged, one that would have a space for every member of the community. Additionally, the district maintained a community website for updates throughout construction.
Middle Road Elementary’s design encourages collaboration through open common spaces, adaptable classrooms, and abundant natural light and scenic views, while embracing technology as a tool for exploration; state-of-the-art resources are integrated seamlessly into the space. Middle Road Elementary School empowers students to become lifelong learners and active participants in their own education.
