Built in 1909, historic McGuffey Hall was designed in Miami University’s signature Georgian architectural style. The renovation involved a complete gutting and interior redesign, as well as major upgrades in infrastructure, technology systems and the building’s exterior.
Previous construction projects presented issues that factored into the architect’s design process. The original building featured a two-story auditorium and during a later project, the second floor of the auditorium was filled in and a third floor was built. Architects could see in the walls what process was used and were able to transform the auditorium back to its original glory.
To cater to the millennial generation, flexible classroom spaces with soft seating, as well as a new commons area, were included in the renovation. To promote a sense of belonging, warm colors were used on the walls, and the original terra cotta floor tile was salvaged.
The renovation speaks to the legacy of the building and the university. Restoration of the facility’s exterior focused on preserving and highlighting its original features. The building continues to blend with the historic Miami campus while serving the needs of future students.
