Miami University, Laws Hall Business, Engineering, Science & Technology (BEST) Library
Oxford, Ohio
Miami University’s Laws Hall was transformed from an aging 1950s classroom building into a 21st century interdisciplinary library to serve the university’s science, business and engineering programs.
BHDP’s design expresses the project mission statement to “provide an environment conducive to effective and inspired teaching and learning.” The renovated spaces transformed the static plan into a dynamic flow of large, open collaboration spaces and small, intimate learning nodes with close attention to the relationship of technology in the pursuit of knowledge. To support multiple learning communities and encourage interaction between students, faculty and librarians, much of the new space functions as a “Learning Gallery,” designed with flat screen monitors, projectors, 3D scanners/ printers, and a raised-floor system for power and technological flexibility. Book collections are stored in compact shelving on the lower level, providing room for additional study space.
In its first year of operation, the library saw a 19 percent increase in patron attendance over their previous science library. According to new Library Dean, Jerome Conley, “We truly believe this library complements our other libraries on campus.”
