Miami University, Armstrong Student Center
Oxford, Ohio
Miami University’s student life center had become outdated, underused and ill-equipped to meet the needs of its students. As a university that prides itself on placing students first, Miami built the Armstrong Student Center (ASC) to create a facility focused entirely on its student community.
The overall concept involves the adaptive repurposing of three existing buildings and the creation of a new infill building to support a robust program for student socialization, recreation, scholarship, dining and student events. The three-story center’s key spaces include a skylighted “interior street,” a 500-seat theater, a large event space and a culinary marketplace ideal for students on the go or those settling in to study. Technological resources abound in the many distributed lounges, student government offices and study spaces to promote scholarly and social interaction. The ASC also contains a multicultural suite, reflection room and Wikiami room dedicated to the Miami Native American tribe.
Challenges posed by the project included incorporating finishes that were attractive yet durable to withstand heavy use over time, as well as transforming the mechanical, electrical and plumbing elements of a low-bay, utilitarian building into a complex, technology-rich, multi-use facility.
