Mesa College, Mathematics and Sciences Building
San Diego, California
The four-story Mathematics & Natural Sciences Building houses the departments of mathematics, physical science, biology, and chemistry at San Diego Mesa College. Because of site constraints, the building is broken up into two wings: one wing for classrooms and offices, the other wing for the lab component.
Within the lab wing, typically two teaching labs are oriented adjacent to a preparatory space, while providing natural light into all of the teaching labs. The use of natural light reduces energy demands and helps to reduce eyestrain while increasing productivity. Creating an “inner courtyard” also provided additional shading from direct sunlight.
The teaching labs are uniquely designed for each department and incorporate sustainable materials such as renewable resource bamboo and non-petroleum based linoleum. Other materials were chosen for their high volume of recycled content. All windows utilize high performance glass to reduce the amount of UV light and solar heat gain. The building and associated site improvements implement a number of sustainable design practices and the project is on track to obtain LEED Silver Certification.
