Mercer University, Cruz Plaza
Macon, Georgia
The Cruz Plaza project renovated the geographical center of Mercer University’s historic Macon campus. The project site consisted of a roadway and parking lot, underused plazas, and sidewalks that did not match existing circulation patterns. The main library, student commons (food service), academic buildings, residence halls, and the main athletics facility fronted onto the open space, but were not well represented because of existing vehicular circulation networks.
The redesign created a series of plazas and gathering spaces, for use in both programmed events and impromptu student gatherings. The improvements created a strong institutional sense of place. The relocation of an existing bear sculpture in the project also created a new “Bear Walk” tradition on football game days.
