Menlo Park Elementary School

LAN Associates provided design services for an addition at the Menlo Park Elementary School in Edison, N.J. The school needed a gymnasium/performance space separate from its existing cafeteria. The addition included a multipurpose room and performance stage, eight new classrooms, and an instrumental music room.
The multipurpose room has basketball courts and rock climbing walls for physical education classes, as well as a performance stage for the band and choirs. The multipurpose space was designed to have ample amounts of diffused daylight by using glazing that creates a brighter interior without the glare that could interfere with physical education activities. Acoustic block and perforated metal decks reduced sound reverberation and unwanted noises.
The multipurpose room addition has a separate exterior entrance and a lobby with a 3D accent wall that has color-changing LEDs for a variety of performances, sporting activities, and other community events. The exterior of the building was designed with brick and metal panels that match the existing school building to reflect one cohesive and modern design.
