McHenry County College, Liebman Science Center
Crystal Lake, Illinois
The Liebman Science Center at McHenry County College was developed to support the college’s progressive science curriculum and provide an inspirational and engaging learning environment. The functional need for modernized labs was a primary programmatic focus of the project; however, the design also incorporates numerous opportunities for learning to occur outside the labs and classrooms.
Situated at the top of a ridge, along a stand of pine trees, the building blends into its natural surroundings by incorporating organic building materials and the creation of outdoor learning environments. These outdoor areas include an outcropping of limestone that defines gathering space for students, a stargazing area, an entry plaza that includes a geo-scene wall, and pathways that meander through native landscaping.
A planetarium, defined by a backlit celestial graphic and framed by a zinc enclosure, is cantilevered from the building’s façade as a dynamic expression of the program within. Integrated graphics, displays, and technology related to the sciences are incorporated throughout the building’s interior to encourage exploration and discovery between class sessions.
