Matzke Elementary School
Houston, Texas
The new Matzke Elementary School design reflects today’s fast-changing pedagogy and provides flexibility to adapt to future needs. The campus is divided into two areas: the “noisy” area, which houses the main entry and administration, library, dining commons, gym and art rooms; and the “quiet” area, which houses the classrooms, science labs and resource rooms.
The two-level classroom wing is divided into three pods. Each pod houses a different grade. Within every pod is an open collaboration area with operable glass partitions that provide flexibility for future growth. Classrooms are combined in sets of twos and threes, enabling cross-collaboration among students and teachers. The design of this wing also brings plentiful daylight into classrooms and hallways.
Colors and graphics play a key role in the school design. Graphics are placed in communal areas to create teaching opportunities. Even the science labs incorporate color through an exposed ceiling structure that shows color-coded infrastructure, such as water pipes. The new Matzke Elementary encourages students to continually engage with their environment.
