Massaponax High School
Spotsylvania County, Virginia
The newest of four high schools in Spotsylvania County, Va., serves 1,500 students in grades 9-12. The 257,000-square-foot facility built of masonry and steel carries out its mission of providing quality education and a gathering place for the community by grouping areas according to specific activities: commons area/Administrative suites; athletic complex; auditorium and music complex; two-story academic wing; vocational wing.
The 1,300-seat auditorium and 2,000-seat gymnasium each host a variety of programs for the students and the community. Academic space is easily secured during public functions, and security during school hours is enhanced by the placement of faculty resource centers between the main corridors on both levels of the academic wing. Large glass windows are featured in the faculty resource centers to help teachers monitor activity in the hallways.
The entire school is wired for current and future technologies, and the media center serves as the hub for information exchange, and also is designed for after-hours use with its own private entrance.
The flexible design allows for future expansion, and employs a variable-air-volume system for maximum efficiency and temperature control.
