Planned to open its doors to students in September 2010, this project encompasses the creation of a new 190,000-square-foot high school serving 1,600 students. Responding to the school district’s new
academy-based educational program, the school is configured as four small learning communities—each with a unique spatial identity aligned with its educational focus—and a shared community commons facility.
The architectural response to this district’s educational philosophy creates flexible learning spaces that engage each student and address unique learning styles. The design of the academy buildings conjoins these spaces according to their interrelationships.
Situated in pristine, northwest forest land, the five structures are situated to minimize site impact, with buildings touching down lightly on the site’s natural contours. Building arrangements create outdoor in-between spaces where the school functions as the community at-large.
A sustainable architecture of transparency ensures that students are always connected to teachers, one another, the verdant campus and the global community. Here, learning happens everywhere, with essential connectivity creating a unique sense of place evoking global consciousness.
