Marlboro Early Learning Center
Marlboro, New Jersey
The building is situated in an open field that previously was used as farmland. By providing a site and building in which children felt psychologically secure, the district was able to meet the physical needs of children and parents. The multiuse student commons, spacious classrooms and fence-enclosed outdoor play areas encourage student interaction.
The use of large windows with low sills, an abundance of daylight, natural ventilation and a high circular window in the cathedral ceiling portion of the classroom offers children a connection with the outdoors.
Individual classrooms provide a carpeted area for small-group reading, and in addition to the general teaching area, students can visit various learning centers within the classroom. Students can maintain visual contact with their individual cubbies, which adds to their feeling of security. Each classroom also contains a computer area for Internet and technology instruction, as well as a “wet area” for projects that require a water source. Every classroom is wired for computer technology, Internet access and equipped with a TV/VCR and bathroom. All special-needs classrooms have direct access to a fence-enclosed play area.
